# What missed calls really cost UK small businesses

Research published this month puts the cost of missed calls to UK small and medium-sized businesses at £3.7 billion a year. It is an estimate, and the people behind it say so. But it lines up with what most owners already feel: every unanswered ring is a customer you may not hear from again.

## The headline number

At the start of October, [research commissioned by BT Business](https://newsroom.bt.com/ai-from-bt-launched-to-help-uk-firms-adopt-ai-with-confidence-targeting-37-billion-lost-through-missed-calls/) put a figure on something most small business owners have felt for years. It estimated that UK small and medium-sized enterprises lose **£3.7 billion a year** through missed calls. Broken down, the press release says that is about £71 million a week.

It is a big, round, headline-friendly number, so it is worth being clear about how it was made. The researchers, Censuswide, asked 1,500 decision makers at UK firms with fewer than 250 staff, across all 12 UK regions, to estimate what missed calls cost them. Those answers were then scaled up using the government's own count of UK businesses. The release itself describes the total as "based on respondents' own estimates" and "indicative". That is honest, and it is how we would describe it too.

## What it looks like for a small firm

The more useful figures are the ones per business. For a firm with **1 to 9 employees**, the estimated loss was **£1,597 a year**. For firms with **10 to 49 employees**, it was **£3,753 a year**.

Those numbers will be far too high for some businesses and far too low for others. A dog groomer who misses a call about a routine trim loses less than a roofer who misses a call about a full re-roof. But the shape of the problem is the same: the call you miss is rarely the customer who would have waited.

## Two thirds miss calls every day

According to the same research, **67% of SMEs** said that on an average day they miss at least one call they believe results in lost business. **58%** said they spend between 30 minutes and two hours a day answering the phone, and **85%** said answering calls interrupts their other work.

That last figure is the real tension. The phone is how customers reach you, but it also pulls you away from the work that pays. In the consumer survey, phone calls came out as the number one preferred way to contact a business.

## Three tries, then they stop

The consumer half of the study surveyed 2,000 UK adults. **75%** said they give a business **three call attempts** before giving up. And **58%** said they would tell friends and family to avoid a business that failed to pick up.

Three tries sounds generous until you think about a normal working day. If you are on a job from 8 until 5, three calls in a morning can easily all go unanswered. By lunchtime, that customer has rung someone else.

## It isn't a new problem

Older studies point the same way. A [2016 report by the call-answering company Moneypenny](https://www.moneypenny.com/uk/resources/news/small-business-call-report/), based on a survey of 300 UK micro businesses and its own call data, found that **69%** of callers who reached a voicemail hung up rather than leave a message. In the same report, 30% of the small businesses surveyed let calls go to voicemail or ring out.

Ten years apart, different methods, the same message: when nobody answers, most people don't wait.

## What you can do about it

You don't need to hire a receptionist to fix most of this. A few practical steps:

- **Know your gaps.** Check your phone's call log for a fortnight. When do the missed calls cluster? First thing, lunchtime, evenings?
- **Make the voicemail work harder.** If you rely on voicemail, use a short greeting in your business name that tells callers when you will ring back. But expect many callers to hang up anyway.
- **Divert when you're busy.** Every UK network lets you forward calls when you don't answer. Our [call divert guides](https://brightray.co.uk/ai-receptionist/call-divert/) walk through it for [EE](https://brightray.co.uk/ai-receptionist/call-divert/ee/), [Vodafone](https://brightray.co.uk/ai-receptionist/call-divert/vodafone/), [O2](https://brightray.co.uk/ai-receptionist/call-divert/o2/), [Three](https://brightray.co.uk/ai-receptionist/call-divert/three/) and [landlines](https://brightray.co.uk/ai-receptionist/call-divert/landline-voip/).
- **Have something answer.** An [AI receptionist](https://brightray.co.uk/ai-receptionist/) answers in a natural, clear voice, tells the caller the call is recorded, takes their name, number and what they need, and emails you a summary straight away, followed by the recording and transcript. You ring back with the details in front of you.

Questions

## Asked and answered.

How much do missed calls cost UK businesses?+

Research commissioned by BT Business and carried out by Censuswide in September 2026 estimates UK SMEs lose £3.7 billion a year through missed calls. The figure is built from business owners' own estimates of lost work, scaled up using government business counts, so it is indicative rather than exact.

How was the £3.7 billion figure calculated?+

1,500 decision makers at UK firms with fewer than 250 staff estimated what missed calls cost them. Those per-business estimates were multiplied by the number of businesses in each size band in the Department for Business and Trade's Business Population Estimates 2025.

How many times will a customer ring before giving up?+

In the consumer side of the same research, 75% of 2,000 UK adults said they give a business three call attempts before giving up.

Is this research independent?+

No. It was commissioned by BT Business, which sells business phone services, and carried out by the research agency Censuswide. We quote it because the method is published and the numbers are clearly labelled as estimates.

What is the simplest way to stop losing calls?+

Make sure every call gets answered by something that takes the caller's details, even when you can't pick up. That can be a colleague, a call-answering service or an AI receptionist, and you can divert your existing number to it when you are busy.
