Recurring Payments
GoCardless on your website: collect Direct Debits and recurring payments
GoCardless lets you collect regular payments straight from your customers' bank accounts by Direct Debit, set up through your website. It is built for recurring income — memberships, subscriptions, monthly retainers and care plans — where the same amount is due on the same day each month. Once a customer authorises it, the money is pulled automatically, so you stop chasing and start getting paid on time. We use GoCardless for our own care plans at Brightray, so this isn't theory.

What Direct Debit actually is
Direct Debit is the quiet, dependable way most regular bills get paid in the UK — your phone contract, your gym, your insurance. The customer gives permission once, and from then on the agreed amount is collected automatically on the due date. They stay in control (they can cancel through their bank and they're protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee), but they never have to remember to pay you, and you never have to send a reminder. For anything ongoing, that is a far better experience than emailing an invoice every month and hoping.
Why recurring payments become effortless
The magic of GoCardless is that the effort happens once, at sign-up. After that, it runs itself.
- The money just arrives. No monthly invoices to raise, no card details to re-enter, no "sorry, meant to pay that" emails.
- Failed and expired cards stop being a problem. Cards expire and get cancelled; bank accounts rarely change. Direct Debit avoids the churn of a subscription silently failing because someone got a new card.
- You can predict your income. When your regular payments collect on schedule, you know what's coming in and when. That makes cash flow calm instead of lumpy.
For a business built on ongoing relationships — a clinic with monthly plans, a gym or club with memberships, an agency on a retainer, a tradesperson with a service contract — this is the difference between income you have to work for every month and income that simply turns up.
What GoCardless is best for
GoCardless shines when the payment is regular and predictable:
- Memberships and clubs
- Subscriptions and boxes
- Monthly or quarterly retainers
- Care plans and service contracts
- Payment plans that spread a bigger cost over several months
It is usually the cheapest way to collect recurring money, because Direct Debit fees tend to be lower than card fees — you generally pay a small percentage per transaction, and the exact rate varies. Over a year of monthly collections, that difference adds up.
What GoCardless is not built for is the impulse, pay-now-this-second moment — someone buying a single item and wanting it instantly. Direct Debit takes a little longer to clear than a card. For those one-off online payments, cards via Stripe or PayPal are the better tool, and plenty of businesses run both.
You stay out of the sensitive bits
Setting up Direct Debit through your website is safe and straightforward for you. The customer enters their bank details on GoCardless's secure system, not yours — you never store or handle that sensitive information. You just get told when a customer has signed up and when each payment has been collected. It looks and feels professional, which reassures customers that they're dealing with a real, established business.
How Brightray sets it up
We connect GoCardless to your website and add a clean sign-up flow, so a customer can join a plan or start a subscription in a couple of taps. We'll help you decide what your plans should be — amounts, frequency, what happens if a payment fails — and we test the whole thing with a live payment before you launch. Because we run our own care plans on GoCardless, we can set yours up the sensible way from day one.
If your business has any element of "the same customers, paying regularly", getting this in place is one of the highest-value things you can do. It turns billing from a monthly chore into something that looks after itself.
