Tradespeople and the on-the-tools problem

If you're a plumber, electrician or roofer, the phone rings when you're least able to answer it. Surveys of UK tradespeople show how often that costs them work, and how many are tempted to answer in places they really shouldn't.

Key figures
  • 34% of tradespeople believe they've lost work by not answering the phone (Builders Station survey, 2022)
  • 60% struggle to answer the phone at work (same survey)
  • 72% worry about losing work if they can't answer (Everreach survey, reported 2024)
  • 4 in 5 tempted to answer even somewhere unsafe, such as up a ladder (same survey)

The phone rings at the worst moment

Every tradesperson knows it. You're halfway up a ladder, both hands busy, or lying under a sink with water where it shouldn't be, and your phone starts buzzing in your pocket. It might be a new customer with a big job. It might be a sales call. You can't tell, and you can't answer.

Construction is the largest SME sector in the UK. According to the government's Business population estimates 2025, there were 885,000 construction SMEs at the start of 2025, 16% of all SMEs. A huge share of these are one-person and small-team firms whose owner is also the person on the tools.

A third think they've lost work

In 2022, Fix Radio reported on a survey of more than 220 tradespeople by the Builders Station. It found:

  • 34% believed they had lost work because they couldn't answer the phone.
  • 60% said they struggled to answer the phone while at work.
  • Only 22% had a landline number on their website, and just 4% saw a landline as their main way of talking to clients.

That last point matters. For most trades, the business phone is the mobile in your pocket. It goes everywhere you go, including up ladders and into lofts. The survey's methodology is only briefly described, so treat the numbers as a snapshot rather than a census, but they match what most tradespeople will recognise.

Tempted to answer up a ladder

A separate survey by Everreach, a company that provides services for small businesses, asked more than 250 UK trade businesses about missed calls. As reported by Arthur Online in April 2024:

  • 72% of tradespeople worried about losing work if they couldn't answer.
  • Four out of five admitted being tempted to answer their phone at work even when they were somewhere unsafe, such as up a ladder.

That is the real cost of the on-the-tools problem. It isn't only the lost jobs. It's the pressure to grab the phone at exactly the moment you shouldn't.

Customers won't wait long

From the customer's side, the picture is just as clear. In research commissioned by BT Business and carried out by Censuswide in September 2026, 75% of 2,000 UK adults said they give a business three call attempts before giving up. In a June 2026 YouGov survey commissioned by Answer4u, only 6% said they would leave a voicemail rather than keep waiting.

Somebody with a leaking ceiling isn't going to sit tight until you finish your job. They'll ring the next plumber.

Safer ways to stop missing jobs

You can't stop the phone ringing at awkward moments. You can decide what happens when you don't pick up.

  1. Divert when you don't answer. All the main UK networks let you forward unanswered calls. Our call divert guides cover EE, Vodafone, O2, Three, giffgaff and more.
  2. Have the call answered properly. An AI receptionist answers in a natural, clear voice, tells the caller the call is recorded, and takes their name, number and what they need. You get an email with a summary straight away, then the recording and transcript.
  3. Ring back from somewhere safe. When you're down the ladder, you open the email and call them back knowing exactly what the job is.

See how this works for your trade: plumbers, electricians, roofers, joiners, plasterers, bricklayers, painters and decorators, locksmiths and landscapers and gardeners. The full list is on our trades page.

Questions

Asked and answered.

How many tradespeople lose work by missing calls?+

In a survey of more than 220 tradespeople by the Builders Station, reported by Fix Radio in October 2022, 34% said they believed they had lost work because they couldn't answer the phone. It's self-reported, so it measures what tradespeople believe, not audited losses.

Is it safe to answer the phone up a ladder?+

Most people would say no. In a survey by Everreach of more than 250 UK trade businesses, four in five tradespeople admitted being tempted to answer their phone at work even in an unsafe situation, such as up a ladder.

How can a tradesperson stop missing calls?+

Divert your mobile when you don't answer to something that takes the caller's details, whether that's a colleague, a call-answering service or an AI receptionist. You then ring back when you're off the ladder or out from under the sink.

Do customers wait for a tradesperson to call back?+

Many don't. In research commissioned by BT Business in 2026, 75% of consumers said they give a business three call attempts before giving up.

Does an AI receptionist work for my trade?+

It's built for people who can't answer while they're working. We have pages for plumbers, electricians, roofers, joiners, plasterers, locksmiths, cleaners and more, each showing how a call for that trade is handled.
